Athens Conservancy Annual Meeting Thursday, November 2, 2017

Please join us for our annual potluck meeting on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at the Ohio Department of Natural Resources meeting room located at 360 East State Street in Athens.  Bring a dish to share and come mingle with our members.  The food is always divinely delicious, the best potluck around! Fungi expert Martha Bishop will be speaking on the topic of mushrooms found in our region.  From the death angel to the savory chanterelle.  You won’t want to miss it! Potluck at 6 and speaker to begin about 7:30.  See you there!

Visit the Athens Conservancy Booth at the 19th Annual Ohio Pawpaw Festival

Come visit the Athens Conservancy booth at the 19th Annual Ohio Pawpaw Festival located at Lake Snowden in Albany on September 15-17, 2017.   Hours are Friday: 4 pm – midnight; Saturday: 10 am – midnight; and Sunday: 10 am – 5 pm.

The Athens Bicycle Shop has once again donated a bicycle to the Athens Conservancy to be raffled at our booth.  The winning ticket will be drawn on Sunday at 2:00PM.  Tickets may be purchased at Athens Bicycle until noon on Friday, September 15th or at the Conservancy booth during the festival.  Thank you to Peter Kotses, owner of the bike shop, for his continued support of the Athens Conservancy.

Athens Conservancy T-Shirt

Check out the Athens Conservancy  t-shirt featuring the artwork of Sandy Plunkett.  You can purchase one for $20 at the Farmacy and the Athens Bicycle Shop in Athens or at Athens Conservancy events.  The crew neck t-shirt comes in adult sizes in meteorite (light brown).  T-shirts in grey, tan, blue sage, and sky are available in limited numbers.

Camp at the Blair Preserve!

It’s never too late to enjoy the outdoors!  The Blair Preserve features the Chestnut Grove Camp, the only backpacking campsite in Athens County.  On the Athens Conservancy website, go to Preserves and click on the Blair Preserve to obtain the directions to the campsite.

Mom’s Weekend Hike at the Ridges! Sunday April 2, 2017 11:00 AM

Welcome OU Moms!  Come join us on Sunday, April 2 for either a 1.5 mile or 2.5 mile hike at the Ridges for Mom’s Weekend.  Both hikes depart at 11:00 AM from the parking lot located on Dairy Lane just past the Dairy Barn Arts Center.

From West Green, go south on Richland Ave., across the Hocking River Bridge, straight through the roundabout and turn at the first right onto Dairy Lane (before OU Inn).  Take Dairy Lane about 1/2 mile (you will go past the Dairy Barn) to the top of the hill.  Turn right at the top of the hill into the parking lot.

14th Annual Groundhog Hike, February 5, 2017

Come enjoy some outdoor fun at the 14th annual Groundhog Hike on Sunday, Feb. 5 at Strouds Run State Park.  The meeting place will be Shelterhouse 1 (Bulldog Shelter), located on Strouds Run Road (County Road 20), a half-mile beyond the park entrance if coming from Athens.

Participants may choose to hike on their own, starting anytime between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m., or join either of two guided hikes that begin at 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. The earlier hike will follow a 3.8-mile loop involving the Strouds Run, Thunderbunny and Vista Point Trails.   The later one will be shorter and suitable for families with children.  The hiking route will be flagged and maps will be available.

The Athens Conservancy and Friends of Strouds Run State Park are sponsoring this free event. Hot soup and other refreshments will be provided.  The Athens Conservancy t-shirt designed by Sandy Plunkett will be on sale for $20 at this event.

2016 Annual Potluck Meeting

Come join us at our annual potluck meeting beginning at 6:00 PM on THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2016 at the ODNR building located at 360 E. State Street, Athens.  At 7:30 PM, Julie Zickefoose, a renowned nature author, artist, and NPR commentator, will discuss her most recent book, Baby Birds: An Artist Looks into the Nest.   Ms. Zickefoose will have a limited number of books and art work available for purchase.   If you do not already own an Athens Conservancy t-shirt, featuring the artwork of Sandy Plunkett, they will also be available for purchase.

Spring Discovery Nature Hike

Nature Hike

Sunday April, 10th @ 12:00pm

Bulldog Shelterhouse along Strouds Run Rd.

Come enjoy the emergence of spring in Strouds Run State Park. There will be two guided nature hikes–one at 12:15 (a 3.75-mile loop) and another shorter hike at 12:45 (geared toward families with children). Meet at the Bulldog Shelterhouse along Strouds Run Rd. a half mile east of the park entrance. Feel free to bring a snack to share.
