The Plains Preserve
(Athens Conservancy)

The Plains Preserve was created in 2009-2011 by the Athens Conservancy. It was established in response to a need for right-of-way to establish a bikeway link from the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway to Athens High School and to The Plains community. This preserve not only provides that right-of-way but also protects the valley of Eclipse Run, one of several streams draining The Plains.

Eclipse Run is a perennial stream, which is very unusual for the size of the stream and the size of its surface drainage area. However, The Plains is built on a large glacial outwash terrace. Essentially, The Plains is built on a large flat area of unconsolidated (non-rock) sediments that were trapped in a valley area. This terrace is essentially a giant sponge holding water, and it drains out water year-round, which is why Eclipse Run, in turn, runs year-round.

This preserve will also be available for use as extended land-lab area by Athens High School. It also provides and preserves a scenic drive along Johnson Road, which is the most heavily-traveled County road in Athens County.

There is a nearby Indian mound owned by the Archeological Conservancy (shown on the map).

To get to The Plains Preserve from Athens, go west on US-33 0.9 miles west from OH-550. Turn left on Johnson Road, County Road 7. The preserve starts when the curve to the right starts, and is on both sides for a short stretch, then on the left only, ending at the cemetery.
