Athens County Farm

The County Farm is the former county poorhouse, where the most indigent would be sent to live to farm the land. It is located just east of Chauncey, on Ohio State Route 13. The former poorhouse itself is now Athens County Job and Family Services. The property also features the dog shelter, built near the bridge abutments for the old Athens-Nelsonville Traction Line where it crossed Sunday Creek. The building complex across the highway from the poorhouse was formerly the county recycling center, but is now part of the county sheriff's operations. Just north of the sheriff's area, on Sand Ridge Road, is the old cemetery.

The bottomlands along the river stretching to the east from the main building were formerly farmed, but are now allowed to go fallow as they support the wellfield for the Sunday Creek Water Company wells. There are no developed recreational facilities on this property, but there is a small public fishing pond on Route 13, and a wooded hill with a road leading up to it that may be explored.

The ultimate disposition and use of this property is still up in the air.
