Big Bottom State Memorial commemorates a battle on the banks of the Muskingum River - actually a massacre of white settlers by the native Americans.

Big Bottom features picnic grounds, restrooms, fishing access, and a nice river view.

To get to Big Bottom State Memorial from Athens, take OH-550 14.4 miles northeast from US-33 at Columbus Road, to OH-377. You will pass through Amesville at 10.3 miles on the way. At OH-377, OH-550 turns right to go up a long, steep hill; OH-377 is straight ahead. Sharpsburg is to your left and a gas station is to your right. Take OH-377 another 11.3 miles through the village of Chester Hill to OH-266. Turn right on OH-266 and take it 4.4 miles through the village of Stockport and across the Muskingum River; you'll turn left at 2.3 miles to stay on OH-266. After crossing the river, turn right to stay on OH-266 and go another 1.2 miles to the memorial, on your right.
