Backpacking Campsite

The new backpacking campsite owned by the Athens Conservancy, on the Blair Preserve, is the only backpacking campsite within Athens County. It is located off the new Trace Trail, approximately 3/4 of a mile from Strouds Run Road, or about 1.5 miles from Sells Park.

To reach the campsite from Sells Park, take the Athens Trail to the Trace Trail (which is the first left after the third powerline crossing). Take the Trace Trail to the first left (on an old logging road), which is the Tunnel Rock Trail. Take this trail to the top of the hill and look for the turnoff to the campsite on your left.

To reach the campsite from the Pioneer Cemetery Trailhead in Strouds Run State Park, take the Trace Trail (formerly the Pioneer Cemetery Trail) from the trailhead. After entering the Blair Preserve, and after crossing the subsequent footbridge, take the first right on the Tunnel Rock Trail (an old logging road). Go to the top of the hill and look for the turnoff to the campsite on your left.

There is no fee for using the campsite. Please observe posted campsite regulations, and sign in for your stay. Donations are appreciated; there are forms and envelopes available at the campsite.

Campsite facilities includes level tenting spaces, a fire ring with grill, a picnic table, a sheltered firewood rack, an informational kiosk, two lantern posts, and a clothesline. There is no water source nor toilet facilities.

Be sure to pack out your trash! If you need to park for an overnight stay, park at the Pioneer Cemetery Trailhead, and post a camping notice in your car. View the camping notice for printing.
