Athens County, Ohio GIS Center

This is a site that is maintained by the Athens County, Ohio County Engineer. It has quite a few options. The "GIS Access System" is an online GIS viewer. To download GIS shapefiles and orthofotos, choose the "Download GIS Data" option; click on the "download" links in the right-hand column to download files. Files here include:

• Ohio counties, zip codes, places, and school districts
• Athens County voting precincts, townships, sections
• Athens County census tracts, census block groups, census blocks
• Athens County FEMA floodzones, streams, and water bodies
• Athens County 5-foot, 25-foot, and 10-meter contour lines
• Athens County soil mapping units and landuse/landcover
• Athens County E911 roads and house addresses
• Athens County property parcels
• TIF files of USGS 7.5-minute topo quadrangles, including all that include part of Athens County
• Athens County digital orthofotos, in SID format (requires SID viewer)

Hocking County, Ohio Maps and Drafting Department

This site offers maps in .pdf and .tif graphic formats, as well as data in shapefile and .dwg formats. The .dwg maps are of USGS quadrangle topo lines, and of property parcels by township. .pdf files are of property parcels by township, school districts, and maps of the county and Logan. .tif files are of property parcels by township and by city, subdivision maps, and miscellaneous other maps. Shapefiles are of roadway centerlines, property parcels by township, and benchmarks. This site also offers links to download viewers for .dwg files (these are CAD-system type files, and can usually be easily converted to shapefiles). The site simply provides the directories, and the computer user must choose the file and download it, often without much explanation.

Ohio Metadata Explorer

This site offers access to two types of information: "Live Data and Maps", which may require a login, and "Downloadable Data". The downloadable data includes SID files for aerial orthofotos for the entire state of Ohio; they are provided in quarters of 7.5-minute USGS topo quads (thus, they are 3.75 minutes square). These require a SID viewer. The site also offers various formats of flood hazard maps, groundwater hazard maps, land cover/usage, wetlands inventories, watersheds, soil mapping units, abandoned underground mines, and other data. You must select your area of interest in the small inset map on the left; it's usually easiest to select the magnifying function, then use the mouse cursor to select an area to magnify. Once magnification is enough, then use the select function to define the area, and then do a search.

This site offers shapefiles for Ohio acquifers.

Ohio Department of Transportation Statewide Digital Data

This is a very straightforward and easy-to-use site that provides GIS files in two formats: ESRI shapefiles and GeoMedia .mdb files. Files offered are Ohio counties, townships, cities, airports, railroads, interstates, US highways, and state highways.
